Squadrons: 79 Sq.

Born: 8 April 1900 Manitowoc, Wisconsin

Awards: British Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC)

Notes

Lord enlisted in the U.S. Army but was discharged from the 3rd Texas Infantry when it was learned that he was too young for military service. With an altered birth certificate, he went to Canada where he joined the Royal Flying Corps. After completing his training in England, Lord joined 79 Squadron in France. Flying the Sopwith Dolphin, he and four other pilots in the squadron became aces.

Ever the maverick, looking for an opportunity to fly and fight, Lord flew for the White Russians in their Civil War and was involved later in Mexico, flying as a mercenary pilot for revolutionaries. When the Second World War started, Lord used another altered birth certificate to convince the RAF that he was not too old to fly. Authorities finally caught on to his ruse only after he had flown Hurricanes and fought in combat with his old squadron the 79th.
