Wolf Pack
On March 15, 1944, Capt.
Robert S. Johnson shot down three German Messershmitt Bf-109
fighters when the 56th Fighter Group was involved in a wild melee in the skies over France. This brought Johnson's victory tally to 25, just
one less than Eddie Rickenbacker's World War I record. Several
months later, he shot down two more enemy planes to be the first
to break the vaunted record and, as was the policy of the USAAF,
was promptly retired from combat.
